My Grandma
We first found out my Grandma had cancer when we were in London. At a park by the Parliament building. In front of a statue by Rodin. The Burghers of Calais - a chilling omen. And yet, fitting. She would have loved that statue. My Grandma, had she been in London with us, would have captivated us kids by explaining the tragic story behind the stony men marching towards their deaths. When we got back to California, we would go to lunch with her at her favorite restaurant every week. A few months later, when she was admitted to the hospital, we would don hospital gowns and powdery gloves to tell her all about our lives. Still later, when the doctors decided there was nothing to be done and she was taken home to be cared for by a nurse, we would sit with her and watch all the old movies she had loved as a kid. I remember one day my sister and I went to visit her but I had a bad cold and couldn't get too close to her; I stood in the doorway as my sister ran to hug my grandma. I will never forget how her whole face lit up as she said, "Lauren!" February 10th, 2008, six days before my eighteenth birthday, my whole family sat in the living room waiting for the inevitable to occur. We were doing a puzzle of a bunch of cats lounging in a garden. She would have loved it.
