Alex: I'm going to be just like my father. Which I guess is better than being like my mother, but I don't want to be either of them if I can help it.
Me: You don't have to be either of them. First of all, you're not your father and you're not your mother. You're you, you're Alex. Second, I really don't have much to go on here but it already looks as though you're working harder than both of them combined. Your mother only lives where she lives because you choose to stay there and pay for the place.
Alex: My father makes only like a hundred dollars more than I do a month and the only reason I make that much now is because I work two jobs Jasamine, I want to go to school. I want to do something with my life, I don't want to do this forever.
Me: Well you won't have to.
Alex: It's not that I don't have money, it's just that even when I do, I don't want to spend it. I like being able to buy myself food when I'm hungry. When I was little, I don't know if I've told you this, but when I was little we were pretty poor. I never ate anywhere but when I got home, and even then it was like a piece of bread or something. And now, I have my own money. I can buy myself food. I don't want to go back to how it used to be, but I know if I don't go to school, if I don't make something of myself, I'll be like my father. My father was making so much money when I was younger, you know, he was. He drove a delivery truck, he worked there for like twenty years and was promoted and made so much money, and then they went out of business and they had to let him go and now he lives on social security. And my mother, god, my mother.
Me: Well, what is it you even want to do sweetie?
Alex: I have no idea.
Me: Whatever it is you decide to do, you can do. You don't have to end up like either of your parents, you aren't them.
Alex: It's really easy for you to say that.
Me: Yeah well maybe it's true.
