First of all, lift your spirit up. Don't just stay cooped up in the house, standing in front of your bathroom mirror examining your "flaws". That's a definite no-no. Realize that everyone struggles, you are not alone in this process. Realize that there is more to life than food. Realize that you ARE in total control of your thoughts, what you put in your mouth and your outlook on life. So, if you're really going to give up emotional eating, remember that it's going to suck the first few days, but after that, you're going to notice small changes. It's going to feel great.
Step 1.
Get rid of the food you tend to lean on when emotionally distraught. Either throw it away, give it to friends, burn it, crush it, just do something to get it out of your sight.
Step 2.
Invest in a food journal. Something small. Record your meals.
Step 3.
Don't go all fanatical with the no-carb, no-fat, no-sugar, no-alcohol bull crap that the media throws in our face. That's not healthy, and it's not realistic. Consider portion control. Savor each bite you put in your mouth, and appreciate its goodness and how it's fueling your body.
Remember: There will always be food. You're not going to starve.
Step 4.
Exercise. However you get sweaty, just do it. Minimum 30 minutes everyday.
Step 5.
Look around you. Explore! Get out and move around. Meet new people, do a learning to love you more assignment, call your mother, compliment a stranger, go to Starbucks (or a non-corporate coffee joint) and do some people watching. This will help you to take comfort in something other than food for a change.
Step 6.
Now this is very important. Quit comparing yourself to the likes of Nicole Richie, or Victoria Beckham. They are not you, and you are not them. Unless you have millions of dollars to afford a hair stylist, personal shopper, personal trainer and household chef, the chances of you obtaining their boyish figure is slim...HA, pun intended.
You are beautiful, so embrace YOURself.
Step 7.
Reward yourself for your progress. After the third day, treat yourself to a nice pedicure. After the first week, go buy a pair of new shoes. And after the first month, take a trip to a day spa. Just treat yourself nice.
As a general reminder, you will make mistakes, and when you do, don't be so hard on yourself. YOURE A PERSON FOR CHRIST SAKE!!!! Like all mistakes, we learn from them. Keep a positive attitude, and always love yourself for who YOU are.
