Me: (sees the phone call from the old number I never deleted)

Chris: Hi.

Me: Hey.

Chris: How have you been?

Me: I've been alright. Life's so different now that I'm in college. I feel like I'm in a different world.

Chris: Yeah. Since I dropped out, I feel like everything's changed.

Me: Do you believe it was for the best?

Chris: Yes. I couldn't be in that school anymore. It was just... a hell hole.

Me: That's why I was so eager to leave. I was a zombie during senior year. It was the worst time of my life.

Chris: ...did I contribute to that?

Me: To be honest.....yes.

Chris: ...I'm sorry.

Me: Are you?

Chris: Yes. I know I apologized before but it was half-assed. I never acted on it. But now I'm sorry.

Me: Me too.

Chris: You were my best friend. I shouldn't have done that to you. No one should do that to anyone.

Me: You abandoned me. You spent the whole summer harassing me and then pretending I didn't exist when school started again in the fall, all because of the breakup between me and Dan. You said it wouldn't change anything. You said our friendship was too strong. We were inseparable. You said nothing could tear us apart.

Chris: I know.

Me: I loved you more than anything on this Earth. More than my own family. You meant everything to me. Even more than Danny meant to me.

Chris: You were the best friend I could ever ask for.

Me: Then why did you suddenly decide I was your worst enemy? Why did you just pretend like I meant nothing?

Chris: Because I couldn't think for myself. I was following the crowd. You know that. I let those douchebags make the decisions for me.

Me: You know what you said to me once?

Chris: What?

Me: Word for word...you said: "I couldn't leave you if I tried."

Chris: ....that's why I'm here now.

Me: ........I missed you.

Chris: I want our friendship back. I want you to forgive me and I want to start again.

Me: So do I. Every time I look at the red towers, I can't help but think of you. We talked about walking to them and standing underneath them for so long.

Chris: We never got to.

Me: I know. All we did was sit up on the hill beneath the water tower and look at them over the treeline. They were miles and miles away but we could have done it. Everything just fell apart before we got to.

Chris: ....let's drive to them.

Me: Can we?

Chris: Yes. Let's go. This will be the beginning.

Me: ....Chris?

Chris: Yeah?

Me: .....I forgive you.
