My girlfriend was 14 years when she broke her leg. She was crossing road with her younger sister and was hit by a drunk driver in the middle of broad day light. It was about 3 o'clock in the after noon on a sunny day. The injury to her right leg was a compound fracture to her tibia and fibia (or in English, major leg bones). She ended up winning a lawsuit over this tragic injury but the man, as far as she knows, didn't have to serve any jail time. In order to piece her leg back together, the doctor's had to put a metal plate on her front bone with screws to hold the plate in. She first had to have a temporary cast after the surgery. After she got her cast off, they sent her home without anything covering her leg which she said was very painful. They then gave her a walking cast that she had to wear. She had to wear this for protection the whole time even while she used her crutches. She was on crutches for six months. She was then allowed to walk without her crutches, but she still had to use the walking cast for three more months. Today, her leg still bothers her when she walks on it for a long period of time.
