Growing up with a mother from Turkey, an old world country where traditions, superstitions and principles are at times hilarious or overbearing, I experienced my share of non-traditional remedies that have probably been around for hundreds of years.
Every summer at one point or another fried from the Turkish sun I'd get to experience the cooling effects of yogurt slathered all over my body. Directions: slather sunburnt body with yogurt until the burning skin sensation subsides and shower. I works well and feels great.
Another favorite healer was the sea salt and scarf. Whenever we had a sore throat my mother would get out the iron, ironing board, hair scarf and salt. She would pour approx. two cups of salt onto the center of the scarf then fold it horizontally spreading the salt into a rectangular shape. Then she would iron the scarf/salt heating up the little white crystals. By the way, salt absorbs heat very well. Once the wrap was heated thoroughly around the neck it goes and ahhh, your sore throat subsides.
