Learning To Love You More

Assignment #52
Write the phone call you wish you could have.

Miranda Elliot
Chicago, Illinois USA

Me: Hello?
Laura: Hey, Miranda? It's Laura.
Me: Hey.
Laura: I just wanted to apologize.
Me: About what?
Laura: About everything. How things ended up. I was scared.
Me: Yeah, you were. And you fucked me up for a long time.
Laura: I'm so sorry about that.
Me: I don't necessarily want an apology. I just want you to know what you did to me.
Laura: I really was selfish about everything.
Me: Yeah, you were. But I was also really na•ve about it all.
Laura: That's kinda true too.
Me: I thought it had a chance of becoming something, but I was wrong.
Laura: I'm sorry. That time in my life is all sort of a blur now.
Me: I know what you mean. All the times we spent together and all the conversations we've ever had have sort of blurred together into this question mark, because I'm not sure exactly what all of it meant.
Laura: I don't know what it meant either. But I do know that it was all important to me and I think about you sometimes. I think about how great you were to me when everything else was falling apart. I wish I could have been there for you.
Me: You were. In the beginning, you were. I don't know exactly what happened toward the end, but you were there at the start. And even at the end, you tried your best, I know that. I just wish that your best had been enough to keep youÉwith me. I've moved on and all, but I do wonder what could have been.
Laura: I so long wondering what could have been and why I treated you the way I did. I just could be real with myself, which is what I needed to do before I could be real with you.
Me: Look, I gotta go, but I really do appreciate your call so much.
Laura: Okay. Bye, lover.
Me: Bye.
